The Burning of York

Front to Rear: Ned Brower, Joel Shue, Justin Ploutz

The Spectacular Average Boys have carved a name for themselves in the foothills of Upstate New York over the past several years by infusing a rock vibe into the more traditional folk and mountain music that has so emanated from the region for over a century. Their post-Americana blend has earned the favor of music listeners and festival goers young and not-so-young alike, effectively wielding the characteristic vocal harmonies of lead-singer and banjoist Ned Brower and bassist Joel Shue that might be described as classically folky and hipster-nonchalant all at once. As kids growing up on 90’s alt-rock in an environment rich in musical history, Brower and Shue together with childhood schoolmate and guitarist Justin Ploutz endeavored to develop an inspired style that kept true to their Oneonta hometown, a railroad town on the Susquehanna River. Billing themselves as “The Spectacular Average Boys,” the band fast became known locally for raucous live shows and memorable songwriting. Following a packed hometown gig, the band was approached by drummer and multi-instrumentalist Joe Pfeiffer who, having only very recently moved to the area from a much different musical climate in central New Jersey, quickly fell in love with the sounds of the region. Pfeiffer immediately gained the approval of loyal fans and completed the SAB lineup.

Currently holed up with their instruments in a rustic creek-side cabin, the group prides itself on a do-it-yourself attitude, steadily self-booking hotspot gigs and festivals throughout the region while continuously producing quality contributions to a lively Upstate New York music culture. NYS Music Online said of the band:

“Good times are abound when the Spectacular Average Boys hit a venue…the ‘boys bring a spectacular show of folk, rock, and Americana that get their audience up and moving.”

Songs from their independent debut EP “the Burning of York,” which was recorded at Dryhill Studios (Sean Lennon, Al Galladoro), and a series of upcoming releases entitled “City of the Hills” have drawn comparisons to Modest Mouse, Avett Brothers and Mumford and Sons, but stand on their own as honest and melodically vibrant compositions that leave an impression that is really anything but average.
